Acer Aspire 4710 White screen...

It is almost 4 years since I am using laptop Acer Aspire 4710. Almost all Fedora and OpenSUSE releases worked on it out of the box. But there is one "but" , screen turns white randomly. Before it happened rarely, i was solving it just by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 (switching tty) and back. But after Fedora 12 it was not helping me anymore. And it started to become white more frequently last days. So i decided to solve it or to buy a new laptop.
I found this blog http://blog.shimpossible.com/2007/07/18/white-screen-of-death/ and followed one of it's comments. I removed a small magnet located under the lid cover and it is working now. Seems to be the magnet could have affected the video signal. But than why it was located there?

LTSP on top of Fedora 10 is up and running.

Finally our LTSP set-up is completed and it is running now. I installed LTSP on top of existing Fedora 10 installation. My server configuration is: Pentium Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM 320 GB of HDD. I am using old PC's as a ThinClients for now.
I followed all instructions which are written on installation guide.
Difficulties which i faced during the configurations are: old switch and old network cables. I spend one day to figure out that my switch is not working correctly so finally i replace the switch with new one. Cables were also old. It is always better to have new one than old one :).

Now i am going to monitor the performance. 6 clients are going to be connected to the server. The work load is not so high (Open Office, Internet surfing and printing). I hope performance will be well.

Linux and LTSP as a solution for Educational Institution.

Last week there were a small gathering of computer teachers of International Sebat Educational Institution. I was invited to this gathering to give talk about Open Source , Linux and Fedora. I talked about Fedora especially Fedora education Spin, OpenSUSE life Education and LTSP (according to my friends suggestion).
So after some questions about how Linux can be the solution for labs we decided to try LTSP with Fedora.
And in this week we are going to install and see the performance of LTSP in our lab at out university, which Fedora is already installed. According to the results we will try to adopt it in other schools and institutions.

Solution for Software Labs.

Few months back we had very big trouble in our software laboratories because of virus attacks. We used to use Windows XP but this OS is very vulnerable for viruses. It is getting impossible to work even with notepad(more impossibler with NetBeans and Eclipse) because machine is becoming too slow when it is infected. Our engineers tried various anti virus software but it did not help.
So in one of the meetings they told how they are suffering by formatting PC's and installing tools that we use again and again .
As an alternative we decided to install Fedora in our labs. Why Fedora? Our lab is for Software Development. Fedora has full stack of Software Development tools including java,php,c/c++ and mysql, postgresql and etc... And it is quite easy to install other tools. So you install once and just use it.
So it passed 3 months and our labs are working just fine.

Yeppie , JavaFX is working on Fedora 10.

I followed all the instructions step by step which is described in this blog http://java-javafx-iipt.blogspot.com/2009/03/javafx-111-netbeans-651-on-linux.html and successfully installed JavaFX on Fedora. As you all know JavaFX is not supporting Linux yet. Isn't it strange, that Windows and Mac versions are avialable but Linix not. Anyway, hope we will get Linux version soon.

F10 is upgraded to F11 Alpha without problems.

I am impressed with KDE 4.2. Wireless and Bluetooth working out of the box. I did not face any troubles with suspend and hibernate in Fedora 10 but in F11 it is sometimes not working. I think Sound is better that in F10. Overall i have nice impressions and i hope it will be even better when we will get Fedora 11 Leonidas :).
